My first Grateful Dead album was Blues for Allah. It had the skeleton playing the violin on the front, because I was into Black Sabbath and stuff, I thought the skeleton was a symbol of heavy metal music. lol.
I’d never heard of the Grateful Dead, but when I put Blues for Allah on my turntable, I didn’t stop playing it until the grooves wore down. I can play it in my head from start to finish. I’d never heard such music before, and it blew my mind. It sounds a little trite to say that, but it truly did.
I heard Franklin’s Tower played in concert many many times. Those were the days!
Back in 1995 I tried to get the Internet domain deadhead.com. Back then you would email Jon Postel and he'd let you know if it was taken or not. (Yes, there was just one guy doing domains back then. Look up him on wikipedia, quite the fellow.) I missed it by two weeks so I went with nethead.com. I've had joe@nethead.com eversince.
Was kickin' back on the lawn of the Marin Civic Center listening to a concert/festival afternoon. Kinda lightly attended so I thought I had the grass to myself. Then I sensed somebody sit down nearby. Glanced over and there was Jerry, with a bemused expression, plinkin' along to the tune on his banjo...
Reminds me of Dead Girls, Dead Feats, and Dead Dylan in Eugene. Back then I was 90 lbs lighter and my hair was down to my ass. Those were good old days when you could trust the acid you bought at the shows. I sometimes wonder what came of all those Rainbow Family people.
Welp, at least 35 years later I'm back living in Portland, OR. It's good to be back.
Man, what I'd give to revisit Little Feat opening for them.
